For an organization to become a DE&I champion in the contingent workforce, research suggests that it must first win senior-level support through a clear business case, and then build its capabilities. Nevertheless, SIA’s Best Practices in Contingent Diversity, Equity & Inclusion report states there have been significant barriers preventing organizations from putting together a solid business case. SIA research indicates lack of data is a top barrier prohibiting DE&I adoption (2020: 52% vs. 2022: 47%). Lack of industry data collection standards emerged as the second barrier. Concerns over legal implications and fear of legal exposure are also notable barriers around contingent DE&I.
