Business groups lobby against key Biden labor nominee

President Biden’s pick to run the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division is facing fierce opposition from several business groups, The Hill reported [1].

The Senate Health Committee on July 15 will hold a nomination hearing for David Weil,  who held the same post from 2014 to 2017, during which he pushed to classify independent contractors as employees and criticized gig companies and franchises for relying on contractors.

Business lobbying groups, including the National Restaurant Association, National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors and International Franchise Association, sent a letter to committee leaders July 13 urging them to reject Weil’s nomination, according to The Hill [1].

Weil is dean and professor of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. Read more about the opposition to his nomination from The Hill [1].
