Addressing D&I through diversity staffing firms

It’s been nearly two months since the Black Lives Matter movement resurged after the police killing of George Floyd. Since then, amidst ongoing protests in cities across the US, companies have been looking at ways to help their communities while also looking internally  to ensure their own staff not only feel included, but that their businesses reflect the communities around them.

Part of their efforts will include reserving some of their business for companies that are under diversity ownership. In fact, in an SIA survey of companies [1] with more than 1,000 employees that also have contingent workforce programs in place; 60% said they have a program in place to encourage the use of diversity-owned suppliers. Meanwhile, another 29% were seriously considering putting one in place in the next two years.

For more than 10 years, SIA has produced a list of staffing firms under diversity ownership, based on self-reported status. The 2020 list of diversity staffing firms [2], which number 147, was published this week. It is a great resource for programs looking to build or expand their diversity supplier pool.

In an article in Staffing Industry Review [3] ma [3]gazine [3], SIA Senior Editor Craig Johnson discusses diversity in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and its disproportionate impact on people of color as well as the demands for justice of the Black Lives Matter movement. He talks with owners of some of the firms on the Diversity Suppliers list about their challenges and thoughts on the times.
