Advancing equal opportunity at work: EEOC and DOL unveil initiative

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the US Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs announce the launch of the Hiring Initiative to Reimagine Equity, or HIRE, a collaborative effort to expand access to good jobs for workers from underrepresented communities and help address key hiring and recruitment challenges.

The multi-year effort, chaired by EEOC Chair Charlotte Burrows and OFCCP Director Jenny Yang, will engage a broad array of stakeholders to identify strategies to remove hiring barriers that limit opportunity along the lines of race, color, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ+ status, religion, disability, age and veteran status.

“The HIRE initiative aims to expand employment opportunities as our nation recovers from the pandemic,” Burrows said. “Working with employers and workers to prevent unfair and unnecessary obstacles to equal employment opportunity is a key component of this initiative. This collaboration between EEOC and OFCCP will help create an economy that works for everyone.”

“The nation’s economy continues to add jobs, but we know that many people are still struggling to find quality employment while many employers are reassessing their recruitment and hiring practices to find the talent they need,” Tang added. “Together with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, we will engage with innovative employer and worker efforts  to identify actionable strategies to remove barriers to hiring to unlock our nation’s full talent.”
