As part of our annual Workforce Solutions Buyer Survey, we ask large (1,000+ employees) companies in North America to break down their contingent workforce by worker type.

Statement-of-work consultants comprised an average of 30% among respondents in 2016, up from 20% in 2015. The survey included approximately 200 large companies with contingent workforce programs covering North America (and in some cases additional regions).

Further, more than half of survey respondents expect their companies’ use of SOW workers to increase over the next 10 years. The size and growth of the SOW populations have driven companies to incorporate this workforce within existing contingent workforce management programs.

The 2016 survey results also showed that independent contractors comprised a median 5% and an average of 11% of the contingent workforce. The substantial difference between median and average values suggests that a few companies have a relatively high percentage of independent contractors that is raising the average.
