Staffing buyer fined C$50,000 for temp’s injury

Drummond Metal Fabrication Ltd. was fined C$50,000 (US$39,861) after a temporary worker was critically injured while operating a metal-polishing lathe, the Ontario Ministry of Labour reported. The fine highlights concerns over safety of temps — a subject which had come up for discussion at last month’s CWS Summit [1].

The injury happened in October 2015, but the fine was issued last week. And a supervisor formerly employed by Drummond was fined C$3,500 back in January of this year over the injury.

In the incident, the worker was harmed by a spinning metal plate at a worksite in Vaughan, Ontario, according to the Ministry of Labour. The metal plate was not guarded by a shield or barrier, and the worker was not provided with protective apparel.
