US employment trends: IT vs. overall nonfarm

Over the past decade, employment in IT occupations has grown at a much faster rate than that of overall employment in the US. From 2000 through 2017, total IT employment grew 45.3%, compared with growth of just 11.0% in total nonfarm employment. This equates to a compound annual growth rate of 2.1% for IT employment compared to 0.6% for overall employment during the period.

More recently, that growth has slowed slightly, despite strong demand trends. This reflects a historically tight supply of available technology talent and is evident in a 2.1% average unemployment rate for computer and mathematical occupations in 2018.
