Media company and staffing buyer settles IC case for $4 million

Vox Media Inc. agreed to pay $4 million to settle an independent contractor misclassification case that involved sports bloggers in California and New Jersey, according to court records.

The motion for preliminary approval was filed earlier this month with both sides agreeing to settle.

Sports bloggers for Vox’s SB Nation claim they were misclassified as independent contractors and denied minimum wages, overtime pay and other protections under California, New Jersey and federal law, according to court filings.

The settlement includes 345 sports bloggers in California who worked for SB Nation any time from Sept. 21, 2014, through Aug. 5, 2020. It also includes 118 sports bloggers in New Jersey who worked anytime from March 31, 2014, through Aug. 5, 2020.

The lawsuit is Reddington v. Vox Media Inc. Case No. 1:20-cv-01793.
