The Canadian federal government is looking to make changes to the country’s temporary foreign worker program, CBC News reports .
The government issued a call for public comment on a proposal to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations to provide greater labor mobility to foreign workers, CBC News reports. The change would enable the workers to leave their employer for a new one in their occupation who is approved to hire foreign workers, without the requirement to apply for a new work permit.
Currently, foreign workers are tied to the employer that brought them to the country; they are not allowed to work for anyone else. Under the new proposal, however, foreign workers would be allowed to move between jobs, as long as it is in the same occupation.
The comment period opened June 22 and is set for 30 days.
