The pre-registration period for fiscal 2022 cap-subject H-1B visa petitions opened Tuesday and will run until March 25 at noon EDT, US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced. Prospective petitioners seeking to file H-1B cap-subject petitions, including for beneficiaries eligible for the advanced degree exemption, must first electronically register and then pay the associated $10 H-1B registration fee for each beneficiary.

Petitioners whose pre-registrations are selected will be notified by March 31; beginning April 1, they will be eligible to file a fiscal 2022 cap-subject petition only for the worker named in the registration and within the filing period indicated on the eligibility notice.

H-1B visas go to highly skilled foreign workers such as IT professionals. The number of such visas are capped each year at 65,000 with an additional cap of 20,000 for those who have advanced degrees from the US.

A ban on certain work visas implements by the Trump administration remains in place until March 31. An article in Forbes argues a continued ban is not sustainable amid low computer unemployment levels.
