IC classification: Mass. statute does not apply in workers’ comp cases

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has ruled the state’s independent contractor statute does not determine whether a claimant is an employee eligible for workers’ compensation benefits in a case that has led to questions about worker misclassification, Insurance Journal reports. The court noted Massachusetts law sets at least four different standards for determining employment status, and called for the state legislature to address the lack of uniformity in the law [1].
