Wage and hour. Bexar County (Texas) Judge Nelson Wolff and Commissioner Tommy Calvert have committed to raising the minimum wage for Bexar County employees to $13 an hour this year, and have urged the city of San Antonio and local businesses to do the same, according to news reports.

OSHA. Helmet producer Bell Sports Inc. and staffing provider Kelly Services Inc. agreed to pay penalties of $7,000 each related to the falling death of a temporary worker at Bell’s Rantoul, Ill., facility last October. OSHA proposed the fines in April and the companies settled last week.

OSHA cited the plant for no having no guardrail or other suitable fall protection system in place, according to OSHA documents. The worker had been at the site for about a month when was performing housekeeping activities on the third floor of an automated conveyor line and fell.

Separately, OSHA has renewed its alliance with the American Society of Safety Engineers. During the new five year agreement, OSHA and ASSE will address construction safety, temporary workers and hazards within general industry.

Through the alliance, OSHA and ASSE will work to provide members and others with guidance and training resources on protecting worker safety and health, and understanding workers’ rights and employers’ responsibilities under the OSH Act.
