New Jersey poised to pass IC portable benefits act

New Jersey appears poised to pass legislation that would create a trust fund through which independent workers would be able to buy workers’ compensation and other benefits, writes Ford & Harrison LLP attorney Salvador P. Simao on Lexology [1].

The legislation, called the Portable Benefits Act for Independent Contractors, while aimed at heavy users of independent contractors such as Uber and Lyft, would affect any business that uses 50 or more contractors in 12 consecutive months within the state of New Jersey. Such businesses would be required to contribute funds to a Qualified Benefit Provider for the benefit of the independent contractors. Read more on Lexology [1].
