Independent contractor truck drivers in Southern California filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for an election to form a union, the Daily Breeze newspaper reported. The election would be for 250 independent truck drivers working for XPO Logistics in Los Angeles and San Diego.

According to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, the XPO drivers are pursuing unionization in order to challenge being misclassification as independent contractors. Federal labor law prohibits independent contractors from forming a union, the union says.
