Safety coalition releases best practices for host employers to protect temps

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, along with a coalition of safety organizations and the American Staffing Association, released a new set of best practices [1] to better protect temporary workers on the job.

“Amidst a pandemic, the importance of keeping workers safe and healthy has never been more important,” said NIOSH Director John Howard, M.D. “By following these best practices, host employers can do their part to optimize the safety and health of their workers, both permanent and temporary.”

The new document, Protecting Temporary Workers: Best Practices for Host Employers [1], builds on resources developed under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Temporary Worker Initiative [2], launched in 2013.

The best practices are organized into three sections: evaluation and contracting; training for temporary workers and their worksite supervisors; and injury and illness reporting, response and recordkeeping. The best practices are applicable across industries and occupations.

The document also includes real-life scenarios of how host employers might implement these best practices, checklists [3] and a slide deck [4] to educate their host employer clients about the best practices.

“Nothing is more important than the safety and health of temporary employees in their workplaces,” said ASA President and CEO Richard Wahlquist. “This resource guide provides host employers with the information they need to create and maintain a healthy and safe working environment for temporary employees.”

In addition to NIOSH and the ASA, the co-authors of the guide include the National Occupational Research Agenda Services Sector Council, the American Society of Safety Professionals, and the Safety and Health Assessment and Research for Prevention program out of the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.
