Know the largest US staffing suppliers

Trying out new staffing suppliers can be a supplier management strategy, and contingent workforce managers can look to Staffing Industry Analysts’ annual list of the largest staffing firms in the US to explore options.

The “Largest Staffing Firms in the United States: 2019 Update [1]” report includes 157 companies that generated at least $100 million in US staffing revenue in 2018. The report only considers revenue generated from the provision of temporary workers to business clients, place and search services (direct hire/permanent placement and retained search) and revenue from temp-to-hire conversions.

The US staffing industry continues to be a fragmented industry characterized by a multitude of competitors, according to the report. The largest firm in the US market, Allegis Group, held 6.9% of the market last year while the combined 157 companies listed in this report represented 61.0% of the market.

“This report highlights the breadth and depth of staffing companies currently operating in the US marketplace,” said Timothy Landhuis, director of research, North America at SIA. “Capitalizing on the need for staffing services across all sectors of the economy, we continue to see a multitude of industrial and professional staffing firms sustain impressive revenue levels and achieve further growth.”

By 2018 revenue, the five largest firms are:

  1. Allegis Group: $10.23 billion, 6.9% market share
  2. Randstad Holding: $4.79 billion, 3.2% market share
  3. The Adecco Group: $4.59 billion, 3.1% market share
  4. Robert Half International Inc.: $3.68 billion, 2.5% market share
  5. Kelly Services Inc., $3.53 billion: 2.4% market share

Seventeen firms are included in this year’s report that did not appear in the 2018 list of largest US staffing firms: 22nd Century Technologies, CareerStaff Unlimited (Genesis HealthCare), CoreMedical Group, CSI (Consulting Solutions International), Full Steam Staffing, Green Key Resources, Hayes Locums, LaborMAX Staffing, Lancesoft, Lyneer Staffing Solutions, MedPro Healthcare Staffing, MWIDM, Staffing Alternatives, Surge Staffing, TalentLaunch, Tradesmen International and Vdart.

Industrial and IT represented the largest segment by revenue with 52 firms on the list, followed by IT with 47 companies. Healthcare was the largest skill segment for 29 firms, with 14 of those companies offering travel nurse staffing as their largest segment. On the flip side, the office/clerical and finance/accounting segments were the largest segment for three and two firms, respectively.
